Summer Words


With the temperature soaring into the upper 30s all across Romania and Moldova this week, I thought it was the perfect time to learn some summer words!

The links (underlined words) go to DEX, the online Romanian dictionary where you can see all the declinations and/or gendered versions of the word.

căldură (call-doo-ruh) – Heat

arşiţă (are-sheetz-uh) – Scorching heat (literally “the little burner”)

ars de soare – (arse-day-swar-eh) – Sunburned

arsură – (are-soo-ruh) – Sunburn

insolație – (in-so-latzee-eh) – Heat stroke

estival (esty-vol) – Of or relating to summer

torid (to-reed) – Very hot and dry

caniculă (con-ee-ku-lah) – An extended period of hot weather/the dog days of summer

plajă – (plah-zhuh) – Beach

a face plajă – (ah fotchay plah-zhuh) – To sunbathe/get tanned (literally “to do the beach”)

bronzat – (brawn-zot) – Tanned

bazin – (bah-zeen) – A swimming pool (usually open air)

piscină – (pee-sheena) – Swimming pool

ștrand – (shtrond) – Summertime recreational area that has a swimming pool, restaurant, and other facilities

    I swear, I WILL DON’T CARE about any other subject you will choose to write about, UNTILL you will respond to the critics that you receive in the subjects “Games With Frontiers” and “Rogozin vs. Romania”. Until you do that, I will boycott your page asking the other readers to join my boycott.
