I was listening to manele (as I am wont to do hehe) this morning while cleaning the house and heard this “word” aoleu and it made me laugh as I’ve heard my neighbors use it a million times.
It’s an interjection, which means it’s something people suddenly exclaim and is never “conjugated” or modified in any way (grammatically). There are about a million variants of aoleu but it’s pronounced something that would rhyme with “ah oh the smell”.
About the only way I can “translate” it is “mercy!” or “goodness!” or “oh my word” or something like that. You can hear it yourself in this fine video from a shirtless Domnul Guta around the 2:09 mark where he says Aoleu ce mai scandal am provocat!
AND NOW YOU KNOW! AOLEU!
People from Oltenia (those who have their own time :) say “văleu / văleleu”:

Doesn’t it also mean “oww!”?
