Word of the Day: Bucluc

Oh mercy! The other day while speaking with someone, I heard one of my all time favorite Romanian words and I realized I’d never put it on the blog.

The word in question is bucluc (book-look), which DEX charmingly describes as “an unpleasant situation” or “discord” or “an argument”.

Sometimes it’s difficult to find an exact English translation for Romanian words but in this case we’re quite lucky because it is exactly analogous to the word hullabaloo. In fact, yesterday I witnessed a tremendous argument between some gypsies and some taxi drivers, both parties yelling and screaming and pointing fingers. A fost un mare bucluc ;)

The word bucluc comes from Turkish and is very similar in meaning to the word belea.

AND NOW YOU KNOW!
