The Romania Show!

Ah yes, at long last here it is online for your viewing pleasure. If you like what you see, go ahead and visit the site at www.TheRomaniaShow.com because this is the first and only time I’ll be posting the videos here to this site (the one that you’re reading now).

So… what’s up? Well this is a project that was born at the end of the last year. I’ve been talking to all kinds of people since then and, as you see, in the end I went ahead and got it rolling all by myself. In the future who knows who might join me with this project but the sad truth is that in Romania people are good at talking but not so much at doing. Sometimes if you want to do something, you just do it and then sort it out later.

I’ve already had some questions about The Romania Show so I’ll just go ahead and tell you that this blog (the one you’re reading now) will stay more or less the same as it always has. I love writing and I love the writing arts and this is my blog, without any advertisers or anything else, and it’s going to stay that way. The Romania Show may go another direction in the future so I’m leaving it to a separate website with a separate possible future. Long story short – kingofromania stays the same, The Romania Show (dot com) is where I’ll be video blogging and doing all kinds of other things.

I’ve also received comments that I’m doing “too much”, what with this blog, now The Romania Show, the ongoing work for my documentary (no new episodes coming out soon but yes I am continuing to film for that in bits and pieces, and once the weather gets better I’ll do a whole lot MORE filming), not to mention all kinds of stuff relating to my book (stay tuned for that – good, good news coming up!) and if you’re really paying attention, I also am posting on my food blog. Not to mention I also work a full-time job, have a social life, read books and play with my cats.

Folks, listen, I know I joke around about being Romanian and I often am but the real truth is that I am one ambitious bastard and I get a lot of things done in a single day. That’s true now as it was true 10 years ago. It’s just who I am. Sitting around and watching TV shows or taking 10 coffee breaks during the work day is just not my style, okay? Yes, I am ambitious. Yes, I work hard. Yes, I get a heck of a lot of things done, both “work” and “pleasure” and quite frankly I love it. Yeah sometimes I get close to a flameout but then I ease back and take care of (relaxing) business and it’s fine. Long story short = yes I GET it that it’s difficult to understand that a single person can do so many things at the same time.

I’ve also been asked what’s the “purpose” of The Romanian Show, as if I’m charging you people money to watch the damn thing. First of all, it’s free. If you like it, awesome, thanks because I really appreciate it. I try to make it look easy but you can be sure it took about 15 hours of working with the equipment and software to make a single 12-minute show. As I’ve said many times, reading (esp in English if that’s your second language) is one kind of skill and kicking back with a laptop, a mobile phone or an iPad and watching a YouTube video is something completely different. So yes I love writing and have plenty to “say” in that medium but I also love just talking and have plenty to say on camera as well.

My “goal” here is first of all just to have some fun. I wouldn’t do it otherwise. Secondly if it pans out that this eventually becomes financially lucrative, all the better. I used to work in television back when God talked to Moses (a long time ago) and it was a lot of fun and it’s been fun putting this here show together for you as well. I love my documentary but that has one kind of rhythm and feel (a slower but deeper one) and The Romania Show is much faster and “punchier” as we say. I like both of them and will continue to produce both of them here this year, with all kinds of fun new features for The Romania Show once the weather gets a little better (sorry but it sucks to film in the rain).

And yes, I’ve already had one complaint that TRS is “too long” and “boring”. Unbelievable but hey, what can you do? That’s life. So if you’re Romanian and you’re feeling the strong urge to whine and complain, just do me a favor eh and remember how much you paid for what you see and read on all of my websites, okay? Because it’s a big fat zero. So if you get the urge to say something negative, do me a favor and add a link to something you’ve created that’s better, mmmm-kay?

For those of you who loved it, check on the website, subscribe on Facebook or Twitter or email and all the regular ways and stay tuned for more episodes coming shortly! :)

  1. Good job Sam, that was a decent start to an otherwise interesting show.

    Now, if I may, a few words of advice:
    lose the ticker, it’s pretty distracting – let people focus on you on the stories;
    if you’re filming in 720p, keep it in HD. If you go full screen the video is choppy;
    you might want to sort out the lights – put one at the back of the camera, the one you’re using now is casting a huge shadow;
    please get a microphone, the echo is quite unpleasant.

    I’m not bitching, I just want to see your show perfectly crafted :-)
