What About Breakfast?

Well I’m packed and about to head out the door to Sibiu, the next stop for the filming road show. There is a medieval festival being held this weekend and I can’t wait to catch some of it on “tape” as well as speak to more people.

In the meantime, I present you with a little video I recorded a couple of weeks ago. It’s a couple of guys I know, Sergiu and Marius, goofing around and singing an old pop song called Breakfast at Tiffany’s at a small, local little club here in Cluj-Napoca.

I was mainly at that club to record someone else singing and as you watch the clip below, you can see that while we all adore Sergiu (the heavier guy on the left), his voice isn’t exactly all that great :P But I edited it and uploaded it online for a couple of reasons.

One, it’s another slice of real life here in Romania. I’ve been to a million small, underground little bars like that, located inside what were once basements or wine cellars and many of them spaces that are hundreds of years old. Secondly, if you’ve been in America or Canada or “western” Europe a long time, you’ll definitely notice a few key differences about a Romanian bar.

But lastly, there’s an interesting cultural thing going on here. Those two guys were having fun and drinking and extemporaneously decided to play an old song from 1995. And if you think about what was going on in those days, 16 years ago, both of those guys were probably fairly small children, watching American TV for the first time in their family’s lives, being exposed to new things as Romania transitioned out of its Communist past.

And lo, all these years later, when these two guys are having a drink and a laugh and wanted to sing a fun song, this is the one they chose. Plus you’ll notice the crowd in there all knew the lyrics as well. Anyway, I like it :)

Enjoy the song and stay tuned for clips and stories about my adventures in Sibiu!
