Expression of the Day: Face Plaja

If you speak any kind of Latin-based language, it’s pretty easy to recognize the Romanian word plaja to mean “beach”, as in the sandy strip of shoreline next to a body of water such as an ocean.

But what is face plaja or “to do the beach”? In Romanian this is a very common expression and all it means is to “tan oneself” or “lay out and get some sun” or “work on my tan” or something like that. DEX says it literally means “to take a sun bath” but that sounds a little antiquated in English.

Either way, you certainly don’t need any sand or a beach in order se face plaja. Any place you can find that’s nice and sunny will do!

Note: This expression is conjugated normally with the verb face (to do). Therefore:

I’m working on my tan = Eu fac plaja
You’re working on your tan = Tu faci plaja
We’re working on our tan = Noi facem plaja

AND NOW YOU KNOW!
